Guns - The Evolution of Firearms - Blu-ray

Interesting but too American-centered
This program is well-made and quite interesting, particularly its five first episodes which cover the period through World War I. Unfortunately, the last two episodes which deal with World War II and the modern era are far too centered on American guns to the exclusion of almost all others. While it's understandable that, because of the ever expanding variety in types of guns, a progressively greater selection must be exercized to remain within the duration of the hourly episodes, this does not explain why precious minutes should be liberally expanded in the anecdotal description of the combat performance of certain weapons while other important types of guns are completely ignored. For example Episode 6 which covers World War II provides a (far too) lengthy description of the combat performance of the M-1 Garand, but does not even mention such ground-breaking weapons as the British Sten and German MP38/40 from which modern submachine guns are derived, or the the German Sturmgewher...

Great care was taken to keep the visuals authentic and accurate
There was a clear and consistent effort to be as accurate and authentic as possible in the creation of this DVD series. The historical recreations are intense, layered and detailed with great care in the special effects and historical truth and authenticity along with the powerful voice of narrator Coby Batty and other voice actors help to bring these stories of how firearms have been used and developed (thru use in war and the military) to life for a mass audience - from ancient chinese invention of gunpowder thru the middle ages and the new world, to the American Revolution onto the Civil War, WW1 and WW2... Vietnam era to the invention of the two biggest weapons of our day -- the AK-47 and the M-16... to today's War in Iraq and Afghanistan. Three historical experts comment during all 7 parts of the series.
