Hour: Season Two

The Hour Back and Better Than Ever
The minute I saw the preview for season one in 2011 this show was on my radar as a 'Must See', and it did not disappoint. After the season ended, I immediately pre-ordered the DVDs and have watched them repeatedly.

This year The Hour has returned with season two, and I have to say it has only stepped up it's game (which was a TALL order to accomplish in my book seeing as how I adored season one). In my foray through the world of tv I have found time and again that it is a rare show indeed that only gets better with season two, and this show is one of those rare gems. There is a reason it has received critical acclaim.

The writing is done brilliantly by Abi Morgan (Shame, The Iron Lady). It never fails to grip me and draw me into the characters and the conflicts which they face. What impresses me the most is both the dynamic writing for all of the characters and the fact that the historical setting (this year being the Cold War) is never romanticized, but...

Six More Episodes: This Period Workplace Drama Gets Tough On Crime And Institutionalized Corruption
When the BBC period drama "The Hour" premiered on American TV last year, critics were quick to draw comparisons to AMC's "Mad Men." While both shows might appeal to the same adult demographic, however, I never really gave much credence to this categorization. In fact, the two shows have little in common aside from being period piece dramas bolstered by an easy social atmosphere of drinking and smoking. While there is plenty of workplace intrigue inherent in both shows, Season One of "The Hour" also mixed in a fair share of government espionage. It introduced us to the birth of a TV newsmagazine show called The Hour (how appropriate) as it struggled to find its footing. With the six new episodes of Season Two, The Hour is battling to remain relevant in an increasingly competitive TV market (a timely subject that never seems to go out of style). Principle story threads include a nefarious local business man, a honey pot scandal, police corruption, racial unrest, as well as unexpected...

Engrossing, though not quite as great as season 1
Season 2 of The Hour will appeal to anybody who liked season 1, though in some respects it's quite a different program. It's much more of a thriller than a mystery (after the first two episodes, anyway). It involves the culture of celebrity and domestic corruption much more than superpower politics. Most significantly, the plot has much more to do with Hector and Marnie Madden than Freddie and Bel. Oona Chaplin steals the show almost as much as Ben Whishaw and Anna Chancellor did in season 1, and Dominic West gets some great scenes playing off of her (his final scene with her in episode 6 is striking and memorable, and his best work so far in this program).

The ending of season 2 is much more tense and scary than anything in season 1. There's nothing in this season as inexplicable as the suicide of Thomas Kish in season 1. It holds together pretty well.

I can't discuss the weak points without giving away much of the plot. Suffice it to say that I would have had...

Last of the Summer Wine: Vintage 1997

Them Good Old Boys Is Back
This is a correction on 2/25/13 to my original Nov. 20, 2012 review of the '97 release.
My apologies to you and my mistake was believing and cutting and pasting the THEN listed '97 contents from the BBC America site. I actually cut and pasted the episode listing from the then BBC America site for the '97 release when I posted that review, it turns out they later changed the contents and instead included "Extra Extra" as the special in the '97 release rather than the "Here Comes The Groom" special which the website then listed as part of it's contents. So NOW it looks like, according to the BBC America website episode list of contents, "Here Comes The Groom" will be on the new '98 series DVD set rather than the '97 set. I wish they could get it straight on what the contents are. My apologies for quoting the source, who I thought knew best. Now here is my original review, keep in mind, "Extra Extra" is now the special on the '97 release, not "Here Comes The Groom":

Oh...

Last of the Sumer Wine never disappoints.
They are being released far too slowly. Some of us your primary audience are geting up in years and the release system neeeds to be accelerated to accomodate the audience that has supported them all these years. I am so ready to revisit the Billy Hardcastle years and at this rate, I may not see it happen. I loved 1997 and I watch it over and over,

Disappointed
Episode 11 was not included on this two disc dvd. I was very disappointed not to have seen how Truly was introduced.

Being Human: Season 4

Season Four Is Fantastic!
I was certain that when Mitchell was killed at the end of season 3 that the show would never be the same. However, George was my favorite character and he would be there with Annie and Nina.

When I realized that George and Nina would not survive past the first episode of season 4, I was very upset. But I kept watching because Annie was still there. She is a wonderful character.

I soon realized that the show is so well written and acted that new characters can come on be just as wonderful as the previous characters. Such is the case in season 4.

I soon fell in love with the new werewolf and vampire characters and enjoyed them as much as Mitchell and George.

All previous seasons are fantastic and season 4 is no exception. Buy or watch season 4 without any hesitation. It is worth your time and money.

As another reviewer said, don't compare it to the US version. The British version is superior in every way.

Thank you.

War Child
Just streamed this in because i missed the BBC-A broadcast and i have to say that Instant video has gotten loads better since Season 3. The broadcast was continual and there were no issues, which was a nice.

Season 4 of Being Human picks up where Season 3 left everything, with Mitchell dead and the roommate's in a spiral. It is not the only thing to have happened, however, and the happenings are huge. By the end of this episode the show will have gone through an enormous change and it leaves a lot of questions up in the air. I do not want to ruin any of that, because it kind of shocked me just how much they were willing to rearrange things. It also made for quite the show.

Switching to scenes from 2037, there is a storyline being developed here that deals with George and Nina's baby, the War Child, and a prophecy that vampires have on it. I liked that idea, and the way the show was presented made me really wonder what was happening. honestly, I was afraid this...

Killed off the Hero's and keeps getting better........That is a first............
The American show is very good but this is a cut above. I've never seen a show that kills off the hero's and then gets better. The Actors are great but the writers are the difference makers. Can't wait for the next season.

Twenty Twelve: The Complete Series

A Satiric British Mockumentary Series About The Days Leading Up To The 2012 Olympic Games
Note: I wish both seasons of "Twenty Twelve" had been packaged and released for all markets prior to the Olympic Games! Seems like great cross-promotional opportunity was missed!

A perfect companion piece for the recent 2012 Olympic games, "Twenty Twelve" is so of-the-moment that I'm afraid it will be forgotten soon after the games end. And that would be a shame! This incisive British mockumentary series expertly skewers the trails and tribulations of the individuals responsible for prepping London for the impending competition. Shot over two seasons, the entire run of the series is only 13 episodes with Season One comprised of six and Season Two of seven. I watched both seasons back to back and that seemed an ideal prelude to seeing the Olympics in an amusing new light. What "Twenty Twelve" does well, it does exceedingly well. Strikingly, the show feels both incredibly real and absolutely absurd and this is a difficult balancing act to pull off. It's not an easy job...

My New Favorite Show
I love this show. My only complaint is that there is not more it. Twenty Twelve follows the fake Olympic Deliverance Commission as they prepare for the London 2012 Olympic games. The cast of characters is highlighted by established comedic and dramatic British actors such as Hugh Bonneville, Jessica Hynes, and Olivia Colman. The more they say, the more you realize that they're all good at talking, but not at creating anything of substance. The show follow The Office style of filming, but each exchange is carefully crafted to feel as real as possible while still leaving you laughing and frustrated. Its too bad that BBC America buried this late on a weekend night, because I think it could have been huge in the states. However, that has now been remedied by the release of the complete series on DVD. The only thing lacking is special features as the included cast and crew interviews are all too short. There may only be 13 episodes, but they're well worth the money if you like...

Hysterically Real
I really wish they had been able to continue this series, it is absolutely priceless. Some people will hate it (my husband) but I loved it and couldn't wait to buy the DVD. It is so realistic and SO funny. I actually started reading the newspapers to see what would happen next in London because of what I was seeing when watching Twenty twelve, and as I read the paper it was as if it was a satire piece about the Olympics! Twisted my mind in a great way.

Waking the Dead: Complete Season Seven

Still going strong and better acting and stories with each season.
We purchased an all region DVD player so we could watch the last 3 seasons (7,8 & 9) of this drama. The characters are strong and well played. The stories are NOT the same old formulas we see in so many US dramas. BBC does it right and we will probably continue to track down UK and Canadian tv series to watch.

Love this series!
Grace Foley is awesome! The series has great plots, a great cast, characters that are real and multidimensional, and is just an all around excellent thriller/suspense/drama program with a little comedy thrown in for good measure. If you love British mysteries, this one is a must see.

dutch import - shortened
It's a pity, but this Dutch Pal import has all episodes shortened by approx 10 minutes. The cutting has been done "gently", but leaves some strange ellipses.
No subtitles other than Dutch ones.
Otherwise good quality.

Misfits: Season 2

Fresh, Quirky, Funny, Intelligent
This has got to be one of the most original and funniest series I have seen in a long long time. You manage to feel for the characters in the show and really build a connection with each of them. The plot each week is always well thought out and followed through. Not predictable in any way and just a really fresh idea! Extremely entertaining and overall an excellent series that really is absolutely worth watching.

Epitome of why I Love the BBC
There is nothing negative I can say about this show. If you forced me to come up with something...it would be the wait between episodes.

More Complexity, Laughs, And Surprises In A Stellar (And Game Changing) Second Season
I'll be honest, I fell in love with "The Misfits" on first sight. I like TV that thwarts my expectations. Reading the description of this unabashed British mash-up, one might completely write it off. It sounds as if it could be complete rubbish on paper. But it takes its outlandish premise and runs with it! If you had told me that a show about juvenile delinquents with superpowers would turn into one of my contemporary favorites, I'd have thought you were crazy. Expertly blending ribald comedy with a science fiction theme, "Misfits" is easily one of the funniest and most wildly entertaining shows that I've seen in a while. Seriously. And if I were to describe it further, it would sound even sillier. The five central characters in "Misfits" meet in a community service group, get caught in a freak electrical storm that juices them with lightning, and awake to realize that their world has changed forever. Actually, not just their world but the world around them as the strange storm...
